Bristol-SS Great Britain, Iron Steam Ship
Built in 1843 in Bristol (in the dock she now occupies) the SS Great Britain was the worlds first iron-hulled steam powered ocean going ship. She completed her maiden voyage to New York in 1845 in only 14 days. She was built under the supervision of her designer Isambard Kingdom Brunel and may be considered the peak achievement of the career of possibly the best UK engineer of all time. All images copyright R.J.Stowell
